Building a Trusting Relationship /

There are several, rather obvious ways to build a successful relationship based on trust. A new relationship should be based on trust, and it should not necessarily be the objective to prove that you are trustworthy as much as prove you are not untrustworthy.

Here are a few ways of maintaining a trusting relationship:

- Be very careful of keeping secrets. Secrets can take up a lot of space in a relationship and if you have to keep avoiding the secret it can take up a lot of energy. Your partner may not be able to see you are keeping a secret but they will be curious and will be looking for an opportunity to trip you up or catch you out. Never ever lie, or keep a secret. Telling the truth is by far the best practice in a relationship if you want it to last.

- Moving away from routine. If you were to suddenly change your routine, start coming home late from work, going to the gym, buying a new wardrobe, well you get the picture, your partner is bound to be suspicious. One of the best ways to build a trusting relationship is to be reliable and if this means keeping to a routine, then do it!

- Let your partner know what you want. Verbally express to your partner what you want from the relationship. If you express this out loud, your partner no longer has to rely on guesswork to keep you happy. Clearly defined goals and objectives in a relationship can assure that neither party is under any illusion.

- Let your partner know who you are. If you are shy then let them know. They will be far more understanding of your needs and if a situation arose that was caused by your shyness, then they will understand why and won’t be left in the dark trying to guess what’s wrong.

- Ask questions. And lots of them. Your partner will want to feel that you are interested in them and show an interest in the things that are important to them. Take time to talk to each other at the end of a long day and you will quickly learn a lot about each other.
