Local Greater London
and Salisbury Information /
Salisbury is a Cathedral City near the edge of the Salisbury Plains where the Rivers Ebble, Nadder, Wylye, and Bourne feed into the Avon which then flows south to the sea at Christchurch. Salisbury is the replacement name for ‘New Sarum’, not to be confused with nearby ‘Old Sarum’ which is still in existence. There have been settlements in Salisbury since pre-historic times but the current city wasn’t established until 1220. There are no motorways linking or bypassing the city so all traffic has to go through the centre, there are good public transport links however with both frequent trains and buses to many locations. The original cathedral was built on the hill at Old Sarum and then a larger building on the same site over a hundred years later but a fallout between the military and the clergy at Old Sarum lead to the decision to move the cathedral. Legend has it that the new site was chosen by an arrow being fired from the old site but it is nearly 2 miles away! Some also say that the arrow hit a white deer and it ran, eventually dying on the spot that was chosen for the new cathedral. The current cathedral houses one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta and the oldest mechanical clock in Britain! Stonehenge is only about 8 miles away so many tourists visiting the area will also come to Salisbury. There has always been quite an artistic community in the city and there are still a number of galleries today including one in the library. Many of John Constable’s paintings were of the local countryside and the view to the cathedral spire. There are apparently a number of haunted buildings in the city and ghost tours can be taken. The local Debenhams is said to be one of the buildings as Henry Stafford was beheaded on the site in the 15th Century.
