Local Greater London
and Melksham Information /

Melksham is Wiltshire’s fifth largest town in population terms. It sits about 12 miles south east of Bath on the River Avon and developed as many towns do, from a ford crossing over the river. In 1792 a bank was established at Melksham by Awdry, Long & Bruges. Two London newspapers reportedly misquoted information about the bank in 1813 causing some trouble between the partners at the bank. In 1824 there was further controversy when a parliamentary paper listed the bank under ‘Country Banks Becoming Bankrupt’ causing a number of investors to withdraw their funds immediately. By this time John Long was the sole proprietor and it put him in such financial dire straits that he had to borrow huge sums from his elder brother to be paid back at £3,000 per annum – this was an unthinkable amount of money at the time. Melksham has its own natural hot spa water sources. In 1815 a conglomerate of local businessman built 6 large lodging houses in a crescent shape with a pump room and private baths. They had previously made their money in the textile industry which was now declining in the local area and looked to this as a replacement business venture. Their plans were grand including mirroring the same development at the other side of the town but this never materialised as nearby Bath’s spa was much more popular. The beautiful lodging houses still remain today however.
