Marlborough is well known for having the widest high street in the U.K. and on the twice weekly market days the stalls line up back to back down the middle of the road. The prestigious Marlborough College boarding school sits on the west side of the town and the first signs of human settlement can be found in the grounds in the form of a pre-historic mound. Author of ‘Lord of the Flies’, Nobel Prize winning William Golding grew up in the town. In 1653 most of the town was destroyed by a huge fire. Along with two other smaller fires this lead to the charter banning thatched roofs in Marlborough. One of the properties to be rebuilt was the Merchants House on the north side of the High Street, it is currently under restoration but is open to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays. During the summer there is a week long jazz festival where many of the local pubs, clubs and hotels participate and host live music events. There is also a ‘Mop Fair’ every October, it was once an employment fair for the farming community but over the years it has evolved into just a fun fair.
