Devizes is a small market town gaining its name from the castle that was built there in 1080 by the Bishop of Salisbury – Osmond. The castle was placed on the boundaries of the local manors and therefore was named ‘Castrum ad Devisas’ (The castle at the boundaries). It is thought that the original structure was made from wood and mud, consequently burning down in 1113. The castle was then rebuilt by the next Bishop of Salisbury – Roger, in stone. Throughout history it is known to have been used to house some important prisoners including the eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert of Normandy, who was held there for 20 years. Sadly the castle was destroyed in 1648 and little remains of it to see today. Trades in Devizes have changed over the years, initially a market was set up to cater for the occupants of the castle mainly selling wheat, wool and yarn. Butter, bacon and cheese came in later and the area became well known for its textile industry in the 1500’s. Moving into the 1700’s Devizes had the largest corn market in the country also selling cattle, horses and hops. By the end of the 1700’s the textiles industry had declined and silversmiths, clock makers, milliners and booksellers were starting to fill the town. A little later due to current social fashions brewing, tobacco curing and snuff manufacture became established in the town. Brewing was in Devizes to stay and The Wadworth brewery is still in operation today, it is well known for the horse and cart that delivers barrels to pubs around the town. Wadworth remains one of the major employers in the town today.
