Bradford-on-Avon is a small town in West Wiltshire with a modest population of under 10,000. It dates back to Roman Times but grew significantly during the 1600’s due to the woolen textile industry booming, the River Avon powered the towns wool mills. During the industrial revolution about 30 purpose built mills appeared in Bradford-on-Avon alone, they were set on the banks of the river so they could utilise water and steam power. The town is the smallest of the five in West Wiltshire and sits about 8 miles south east of Bath in the Jurassic Limestone Valley. Therefore many of the buildings are made from the pale stone that is synonymous with the area. With a canal and many historic buildings the town the town is popular with tourists. A popular spectacle is the town bridge over the River Avon with a small domed building that was once a chapel but was then used as a lock up for any drunken trouble makers of an evening! Barton Farm Country Park is much visited, Tithe Barn is Grade II Listed and quite a substantial structure. It was once used to collect taxes to fund the church and these would have mainly been in the form of goods from local industries and the community in general.
