Batley is a town situated in West Yorkshire and has a population of 43,000. The town lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirlees and is 7 miles from Leeds and 1 mile away from Dewsbury. The town was first recorded in the Domesday Book. T eh names seem to have come from a Danish word meaning homestead of Batts, which most likely refers to the Battes family who lived here. The church that stands today in the village was built in the reign of Henry VI. There has been a church in Batley though since the 11th century. The main trade in the town on the 19th century was the ‘Shoddy Trade’, this where wool rags and clothes were recycled into rugs and blankets. At one time there were approximately 30 Shoddy mills working in the Town. It was a big trade for the residents. Nowadays the town has a lot of sports and culture within it. The local rugby team is the Batley Bulldogs, they are a professional club. There are also four cricket teams and they have the local Heavy Woolen Cup that allows teams with 18 miles of Batley to take part in. The association thst runs the cup are called The Heavy Woolen District.
