Livingston was one of the ‘post war’ townships to be created in the 1960’s to ease the overcrowding in either Edinburgh (15miles away) or Glasgow (30 miles away). As the largest town in West Lothian Livingston has a population of over 50,000 people and is made up of a number of residential areas. As far back as the 1100’s a Flemish man called De Leving settled on land here and this is where the name of the ancient village originated. The area remained fairly rural however until it was identified as an area to build housing in the post war baby boom. The surrounding area was known for oil shale mining for many years and the resulting slag heaps can still be seen in the area. Electronics production was a main source of employment nearby but the closure of Motorola and NEC due to a decline in demand left a lot of people without jobs. BSkyB has its main call centre here still and is the biggest employer in the area. Livingston is easily accessible by the A899 which connects the M8 and the A71.
