Weybridge sits at the mouth of the River Wey, hence it’s name and sits in the Elmbridge district of Surrey. It is considered a very affluent part of the London ‘Commuter Belt’ and in a 2008 housing price survey six out of the ten most expensive streets to live in England were in Weybridge. After the opening of the railway station in 1838 the transport links to Southampton and London quickly propelled what was a village to the status of a Town and the location has been popular ever since. There are now a number of large employers including the British HQ for the Sony Corporation and Proctor & Gamble. The early history of Weybridge may be as simple as a River Crossing but then in 1537 Henry VIII built Oatlands Palace here where he married wife number five (Katherine Howard). The palace was demolished just over a hundred years later and the bricks were used in building the Wey Navigation Canal. There is now a hotel on the site of the Palace. There is a monument at the bottom of the aptly named ‘Monument Hill’ dedicated to the Duchess of York. It was erected from remains of a monument that stood in St Martins Lane in Covent Garden, London until 1773. The reasons the locals wanted the monument is because she was laid to rest in the local St. James Churchyard.
