West Molesey is a popular town in Surrey to live as it is in the commuter belt and only 35 minutes by train to Waterloo from nearby Hampton Court station. East and West Molesey are two distinct areas but are only separated by a stone outside the Library on Walton Road. The Hampton Court Flower Show is held nearby every year and extra train services are provided during that time. It is in the Elmbridge district of the county and neighbouring towns include Sunbury-on-Thames, Walton-on-Thames and Kingston-upon-Thames. There has long been a settlement in the area and this was documented in charters as early as 666AD. The name is believed to have come from the word ‘Mul’ meaning river meadow and is not derived from the River Mole that runs through the town as often thought. West Molesey was affected by the flooding of the river in 1968 as were many other towns and villages in the Thames Valley. Sitting just south of the River Thames there are a number of large reservoirs that provide water for some of central London, a few of these are now disused and being turned into nature parks. Quite a few traditional sports have always been linked to the area; Molesey used to be considered the ‘bare knuckle boxing’ capital of England. There once was also a famous race track that stretched some length of the River Thames but part of this is now parkland and the rest has been developed on with houses and flats. The East Molesey Cricket club was established in 1730 making it the second oldest cricket club in the world.
