Teddington is a suburb of South West London sitting on the north bank of the Thames near Twickenham. The river gives the area its identity somewhat as Teddington has the longest Lock (200 metres) on the Thames and an RNLI station. This rescue station is one of four on the river and is the only one that is fully voluntarily staffed. The Hampton Court Gardens were established in the area in 1500 and in 1521 Hampton Court Palace was built on the site of a 14th Centry Manor. It was later used as hunting grounds for King Henry VIII. The local involvement with Royalty has since been a draw to the area. Former Prime Minister Lord North lived in Bushy House for over twenty years and later the future King William IV lived there. The house was later used for the National Phsyical Laboratory where the first atomic clock was build and eventually the bouncing bomb was developed. The railway came to Teddington in 1863 facilitating easy access to London and the surrounding areas. This created a population boom from just over a thousand people to over 14,000 people by 1901!
