Local Hampshire
and Yarmouth Information /

Yarmouth is a port on the west side of the Isle of Wight. The town is predictably named for its location at the mouth of the small Western Yar river. Yarmouth is a crossing point to go over the river, originally with a ferry and eventually replaced with a road bridge in 1863. Originally called Eremue, meaning "muddy estuary" Yarmouth has been a settlement for over a thousand years known as one of the very earliest on the island. The first records here were King Ethelred’s record of the Danegeld tax of 991. The Normans are responsible for the layout of the streets of Yarmouth in a the grid system which can still be seen today Yarmouth Castle was built in 1547 and is now in the care of English Heritage. It was used as a gun platform by Henry VIII to strengthen the defence of the Solent and protect the Isle of Wight, historically an important strategy in the protection against any attempted invasion of England. Until the castle was built, regular raids by the French ensued and in 1544 the town of Yarmouth was apparently burned down. Legend has it that the church bells were taken off to Cherbourg or Boulogne. St. James's Church holds a monument to the 17th-century admiral Sir Robert Holmes who’s operations were based at Yarmouth. He took seized an unfinished sculpture in a raid on a French ship, it was supposed to be Louis XIV of France but he forced the sculptor to finish it with his own head rather than the king's.
