Local Hampshire
and Waterlooville Information /
Legend has it that the town was named after the pub that stood at the centre of town, then called the Waitland End. The Heroes of Waterloo was named upon opening as a long column of weary soldiers, who had just arrived at Portsmouth returning home from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, decided to stop there and celebrate their victory. Local legend claims many of them settled there. The pub was renamed in their honour and the area around known as Waterlooville. The original pub was at a crossroads near the main bus-stop but now a new pub has taken the name at the northern end of the shopping precinct. The town centre was closed to cars in 1981 when ‘Maurepas Way’ was built to take traffic away from the main shopping area. Near the town centre is the now rebuilt St George's church. During the 50’s and 60’s the surrounding area saw extensive housing development resulting in the original Victorian church failing to cope with the population growth. Plans for a new church were started and in 1970 on the site of the old one and some parts of the old church were retained. The town's senior non-league football team is Havant & Waterlooville F.C. who were drawn against Liverpool FC in the FA Cup in the 2007/08 season. Liverpool won the match 5-2 even though Havant & Waterlooville had taken the lead with a goal in the 8th minute from Richard Pacquette. With Havant & Waterlooville F.C. twice leading Liverpool, the match was deemed by the English FA as a fine example of what the FA Challenge Cup should be all about.
