Local Hampshire
and Totland Bay Information /
Totland Bay is the west coast of the Isle of Wight, lying to the west of the village of Totland.. It faces north west with a 4km shoreline stretching from Warden Point in the north to Hatherwood Point in the south west. The seabed is a mixture of mud and sand with a beach of predominantly shingle. Since 2001 the beach has been warded the Seaside Award Flag and throughout the Summer season the beach is litter-picked and seaweed is removed and used for compost by local farmers. At one end of the bay is a lifeboat station built from money raised by local Sunday School children in 1870. in 1915 the Totland Lifeboat Station had the island's first steam lifeboat. The lifeboat station closed in 1924 although its remains are still there today. The bay is best viewed from Headon Warren or anywhere along the concrete seawall where the Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs along from Warden Point to Widdick Chine. The pier at Totland Bay was opened in 1880, it was by S.H and S.W Yockney and commissioned by the Totland Bay Hotel. The pier was constructed from a light girder framework on cast iron piles with a timber deck. The main reason for its construction was to encourage tourists to the area with a large, safe steamer landing stage. When it was opened there was just one small wooden shelter at the head and a small amusement pavilion at the shore end. To start with the pier only was only visited by a small number of steamers carrying tourists from Lymington and Yarmouth, however this later extended to include trips around the island and to mainland destinations like Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth. The pier is no longer open to the public however but there is still a small cafe at the start. The shelter is still in its place at the pier head, privately owned and used as an art gallery.
