During the 50’s and 60’s the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) now known as AWE, became Tadley’s largest employer and a large number of houses were built during this period to accommodate the workers. Although the establishment was located in the parish of Aldermaston most of these houses were built in Tadley putting it on the map. Until the 50’s most of the parish was still heathland covered in gorse and blackberries with a few scattered rural settlements. Bricks were made at Tadley Common and the manufacture of besom brooms (the type of broom that witches are traditionally associated with) was, and still is another local industry. Tadley calls itself ‘the home of besom broom making’ and the brooms that are used on the Queen's premises are manufactured in Tadley. With World War II imminent RAF Aldermaston’s airfield was built on the grounds of Aldermaston Court on the northern edge of the village. Numerous barracks, administration buildings and maintenance facilities were set up throughout Tadley. In recent years Tadley has become a township with residential estates covering the former heathlands. Development has spilled either side of the Hampshire/Berkshire border following the growth of the Atomic Weapons Establishment on the old airfield in the 50’s and also after nearby Basingstoke was deemed a ‘London overspill town’ in the 70’s. Since the opening of AWE in the 1950s many anti-nuclear demonstrations have taken place around the base in Tadley.
