Hook is a large village within the Hart district of northern Hampshire near Basingstoke just off Junction 5 of the M3. Until the 18th century only a few farms populated the area but small hamlets started to form when inns were established to serve travellers probably on their way to London from the south west as Hook was located on the main London to Exeter stagecoach route. In 1883 Hook railway station opened and the village began to grow with railway workers and commuters settling. Interestingly Hook’s Evangelical Free Church was originally paid for by the Burberry family (of clothing fame) who’s first shop opened in nearby Basingstoke. Hook was considered as part of a scheme to accommodate people in the post war London ‘overspill’, but Basingstoke was selected for development instead. House prices remain high in the area due to the combination of a pretty rural location that is has excellent transport links, including a main line rail station to London, Basingstoke and Southampton and direct access to the M3 motorway, whilst alsolying next to the A30. It is also almost equidistant between Southampton and Heathrow airports.
