Fordingbridge sits on the western edge of Hampshire close to the Dorset and Wiltshire borders. It is of course named because of a bridge that sits over a ford running through the town which has seven beautiful arches and can be admired from the parkland surrounding. Fordingbridge used to be a market town and busy industrial centre, it was actually famed for it’s smuggling connections because the Avon runs through with many weeping willows shading the banks making ideal areas for clandestine transactions. Augustus John lived in Fordingbridge for the later years of his life until he died in 1961, he was a post impressionist painter who was often considered controversial for the cruel truth in his portraits. Although his residence in the town was known to be received by mixed feelings from the residents there is now a bronze statue on the banks of the river near the bridge. There used to be a railway station at Fordingbridge just outside the town, this closed in 1964 however and the lack of rail link has probably contributed to keeping the population at a relatively low level of approximately 6,000.
