Local Hampshire
and Basingstoke Information /

Basingstoke is a town in northeast Hampshire lying across a valley at the source of the River Loddon. Basingstoke is comically nicknamed "Doughnut City" due to the number of roundabouts and often mistaken for a new town. It is actually an old market town expanded in the 1960s as part of a tripartite agreement between London County Council, Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke Borough Council. It was rapidly developed along with other towns to accommodate part of the London 'overspill' as predicted under the Greater London Plan of 1944. Basingstoke market was mentioned in the Domesday Book and Basingstoke remained a small market town until the 50’s. It still has a regular market, but is now bigger than the common definition of a market town and has become very prosperous with an above-average standard of living and low unemployment. It is an economic centre housing the UK headquarters of Sun Life Financial of Canada, The AA, Ericsson, GAME, Motorola and Sony Professional Solutions (Europe). The South Western Railway arrived in 1839 from London and was connected to Winchester and Southampton within a year. In 1848 a rival rail company built a line from Reading, and in 1854 a line was connected to Salisbury also. Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in 1856 and is now a household name in the fashion world internationally. His fame was boosted after he invented Gabardine. In 2003’s ‘Crap Towns’ survey Basingstoke was voted 9th! A funny but completely unscientific guide to the worst places to live in Britain.
