Sturminster Newton is shorted by the locals to ‘Stur’. It sits in a bend of the River Stour on a Ford and consequently has a water mill which was restored in the 1980’s and is now a museum. The surrounding region is known for it’s dairy farming and Thomas Hardy lived in the town for some of his life setting ‘Vale of the little dairies’ here. The ford was replaced some 500 years ago with a stone arched bridge and this was widened in the 1800’s and a plaque affixed stating that anyone who damages the bridge will be sent to Australia as their punishment! From the 1800’s through to the 1960’s the Dorset Railway ran through the town until it was demolished as part of a government incentive to cut costs. This may be partly responsible for keeping the towns population at a modest level and it is still only approximately 3,500 today.
