Local Shaftesbury
and Dorset Information /

Shaftesbury is well known for it’s steep cobbled Gold Hill that was featured in Hovis adverts for many years. It is a hilltop settlement over 200m above sea level in North Dorset on the Wiltshire border about 20 miles west of Salisbury. Looking to the North West you can see as far as the Glastonbury Tor on a clear day. It is popularly visited not only for Gold Hill but also for it’s ruined Abbey and nearby Wardour Castle. The town has a modest population of approximately 7000 and employers in the area include Guys Marsh Prison, Wessex Electrical and The Royal Mail. It is believed that Alfred the Great founded a settlement in Shaftesbury in 888. During King Althelstans reign he founded 3 royal mints here producing coins bearing the towns name and the Abbey soon became the wealthiest Benedictine nunnery in the country. This all contributed to the affirmation of Shaftesbury as an important town. Sadly, most of the saxon and medieval buildings have now been ruined but Thomas Hardy famously wrote about how he imagined it must have once been from the remains of the ancient ruins.
