Portland is a small limestone island just off the coast of the busy seaside resort of Weymouth. A long stone spit called Chesil beach connects it to the mainland which can be walked along but access by car is over a bridge. The famous Portland Limestone is still quarried on the island and used in local architecture as it has been throughout the ages and has been used in very important pieces of British architecture including Buckingham Palace and St Pauls Cathedral. Sir Christopher Wren was a famous architect and the local MP for Weymouth, he ordered 6 million tons of local stone be used in the rebuild of London after the Great Fire of 1666. The harbour is manmade and one of the deepest in the world at up to 20m, due to this important Royal Navy ships have often been berthed here making the island a target for World War II bombings. There used to be a Naval Base and Royal Naval Air Station but both were closed in the 1990’s after the end of the cold war. The runway for the RNAS is still used by the coast guard helicopter that serves that stretch of coast today. There are two prisons on Portland and Britain’s only Prison Ship is still berthed in the harbour even though it closed in 1995. The comparatively warm climate of the tied island and surrounding waters attract many rare species of bird and ornithologists from around the world come to visit. Portland also has an impressive butterfly population and over half of the country’s known species (including ones that migrate from elsewhere) have been spotted here. Dolphins, basking sharks and seals have also been seen in the waters surrounding the island.
