Poole is a coastal town in Dorset with an impressive population of approximately 140,000 making it the second largest town in the county. It has been recorded as being used as a port since the 12th century initially used mainly by the wool trade growing at the time. It has a large natural harbour, award winning beaches either side of the harbour and is home to luxury yacht manufacturers Sunskeeker and Merlin Entertainments. It is also the home to the RNLI HQ. The industrial revolution boosted the growth of Poole substantially and at the turn of the 19th century 90% of workers were in harbour related jobs. This did bring a great deal of overcrowding to the area and housing conditions were very poor for some. Through the 1800’s the port lost business to the nearby deep waters of Southampton, Portsmouth and Plymouth who could accommodate larger ships but it was around this time that seaside holiday first became popular and deemed as healthy so one trade was replaced with another. The port remains busy today both commercially and for passenger ferries. During the second world war Pool was one of the main departing points on D-Day for the Normandy landings. Poole suffered atrocious blitzing during the war however and declined substantially in the economic slump that followed. In the 1950’s and 60’s the area was known for it’s slums but a lot of near derelict housing was eventually knocked down and replaced with what still stands today. Since then the local demography has improved substantially and one of the most expensive areas to buy property in the country sits nearby along Sandbanks beach.
