Local Dorchester
and Dorset Information /

Dorchester sits in southern central Dorset on the River Frome, Dorchesters’ first settlement was based around an iron age hill fort known as Maiden Castle. It was one of the most powerful and feared settlements in pre-Roman Great Britain and there is evidence to suggest that there have been tribes living in the area since 4000BC. The Romans fought to take control of Dorchester from the local tribes and eventually defeated them taking control and building their trademark walls around the town in about AD70, some of these can still be seen today. In more recent years The local ‘Tolpuddle Martyrs’ formed a kind of trade union called the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers in 1833, this was legal but them swearing an oath of allegiance to the society made them a threat so they were all arrested and tried in the nearby Shire Hall which still stands today completely preserved. Dorchester has always been a significant place on the map since the beginning of known settlements in the south of England due to it’s fertile soil and excellent position of defence but it still remained quite compact until a number of developments over the years made the town even more prominent. For example; The Marabout Barracks were established in 1794, The Dorchester Union Workhouse was established in 1835, The Southampton & Dorchester railway opened a station in 1847, The Great Western Railway opened a station in 1857 and the Dorset County Police Constabulary was opened in 1860. Since then the suburbs of the town have grown significantly with many new housing estates and developments. The charm of the old town and historical buildings still remain but as Dorchester sits just off the main A35 Southampton – Honiton Road it receives many stop offs and a famous old brewery site (Eldridge Pope) has since been developed into an area of shops and restaurants.
