Local Devon
and Ottery St Mary Information /

Ottery St Mary in Devon is referred to by locals just as ‘Ottery’ and sits approximately ten miles east of Exeter and has a population of about 9,000. It is a town well known in the area for its history and traditions and the locals are known as ‘Ottregians’. There is a school that was originally built by Henry VIII. Also, The Tumbling Wier is often visited as it is a small circular dam of a very rare design. Guy Fawkes Night is traditionally celebrated by an event called ‘The Tar Barrells’ where locals light barrels covered in tar and carry them around the town. Legend has it that the tradition started during the Black Death when cannons were used to scare the rats out of houses and burning barrels were then rolled down the street to kill them. The annual summer tradition is known as Pixie Day and is held in June. The tale goes that many years ago before Christianity came to Ottery the residents believed in Pixie’s but they were known to cause havoc. When the church was built a group of monks were enlisted to safely transport the new bells to the church but as the Pixie’s knew this would be the end to their games they cast a spell over them. The monks started to walk towards the cliffs at nearby Sidmouth but just as they were at the edge one of them stubbed his toe and said ‘god bless my soul’ which broke the spell! Each year the legend is celebrated in Ottery and re-enacted by the local children.
