Okehampton in Devon is a town at the Northern border of Dartmoor. This is where the large army training camp is entered from and is therefore known as ‘Okehampton Camp’, it is used by many military agencies but most famously the Royal Marines who are based on the south coast of Devon at Lympstone. The ‘Ten Tors’ is run here every year, it is a weekend hike run by the army for young people. The population of the town is approximately 6,000 and it enjoys good transport links due the main A30 trunk road passing by the town and the railway station. There is also a heritage railway between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry that opens for tourists and locals alike on summer weekends. The original settlement is on the river Okemount and there are remains of a Roman Fort nearby. As with many towns in the county the wool trade has been a source of income throughout the centuries up until about the Second World War. Okehampton has always been seen as a centre for the surrounding small villages and hamlets and is considered a very picturesque area. This was particularly so during the February snow storms in 2009 when the area received the highest snow fall in the country although this caused considerable inconvenience to the residents.
