North Tawton is a very small town in Devon with a population of under 2,000 people. Although small, as North Tawton has been an established Market Town since the 1100’s it has always kept its ‘Town’ status. Wool production along with agricultural roles have been the main sources of income for the area throughout the centuries and the last woollen mill only closed in the 1930’s. Today there are four major employers in the area; 2 dairy’s, a logistics company and a pet food supplier. The town did have the railway from the late 1800’s but the station was closed in the 1960’s due to a government cost saving initiative across the rail network. Notable residents include William Budd during the 1800’s who discovered that Typhoid was contagious. Also the poet Ted Hughes and his wife at the time Sylvia Plath. The town was also used to represent the fictional place ‘Clatterford St Mary’ in the BBC TV series ‘Jam & Jerusalem’ starring Jennifer Saunders. Many locals were used as extras.
