Kingsbridge is a small town with a modest population of approximately 6,000 in Devon. Today, many tourists pass through Kingsbridge but it originated as a river crossing and the settlement grew around a bridge that is thought to have been built in the 10th Century. The original mills that utilised the water power from the river were converted into wool factories in the late 18th century. Being positioned on an estuary made the town an ideal place for ship building and exporting local goods such as cider and slate.
