Great Torrington in North Devon is usually shortened just to ‘Torrington’ by locals, there is also ‘Little Torrington’ and ‘Black Torrington’ nearby. The region Torrington sits in is affectionately known as ‘Tarka Country’, the picturesque scenery can be brought to mind from the famous film ‘Tarka the Otter’ which originated from a novel written in the 1920’s. Torrington is considered a Market Town and it the railway came here in the late 1800’s but it was closed in the 1960’s due to a government cost saving exercise across the rail network. Dartington Crystal is based here, they are a major local employer and the only remaining working glass factory in the country. There is also a small brewery called ‘Clearwater’ in the town.
