Axminster sits on a hill on the east border of Devon overlooking the River Axe. It is a market town and the market is still held every Thursday. The name is synonymous with carpet and an Axminster power loom can produce excellent quality weaves with a wide range of patterns. Although only true Axminster carpet is made here this type of carpet is now made worldwide. Thomas Whitty instigated the carpet making industry in the town, they were made in Court House. The settlement is known to date back to at least Celtic times (around 300BC) and it sits on the cross of two major Roman routes. In the Domesday book of 1086 the town name was spelled so it mean ‘Church or Monastery by the River Axe’ so it is known to be a place of religious significance. The railway came to Axminster in the late 1800’s but the original lines were closed in the 1960’s due to a government cost cutting incentive. The original station was moved and is now preserved on the historic Water Cress Line in Hampshire. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of self-sufficient TV chef fame has his farm in the Axe Valley and has purchased an old pub in the town that is to be another business premises.
