The town of Hartlepool is situated in the north east of England in the ceremonial county of County Durham. Hartlepool has a population of 90,290 with six secondary schools, one college of higher education and also has a campus of Cleveland College of Art and Design which is the only specialist college for these subjects in the north east of England. During the Second World War Hartlepool was very important in the building of ships, this gave the town a lift after the depression of the 1930s and the last renaissance of these industries during the First World War. The towns shipbuilders mostly built the ‘Empire Ships’ which were popular. During both Wars Hartlepool was a key target for German Bombers who raided the town at least 43 times. In December 1914 during the First World War the Imperial German Navy Bombed Hartlepool with 1150 shells, killing 117 people. Nowadays Hartlepool has a main shopping centre called the Middle Grange Shopping Centre. In the 1990s an effort was made to regenerate the town so a Marina was built, the Historic Quay was regenerated plus more housing was built.
