The town of Turriff in the county of Aberdeenshire has a population of approximately 4,500. The town dates back to 1000 where a Columban settlement was located with a monastery. This no longer exists but part of a church that was erected some time later can still be seen on Castle Street. It is named St Congans Church and the original part that still stands is the tower. Turriff expanded due to the agricultural industry in 1800. It was also a town on the route to larger cities such as Aberdeen and Banff so lots of Inns were needed to accommodate travelers. The town was notorious for having twice as many whiskey and ale houses as it did Butchers. Nowadays the main road still runs through the town making it a bustling place to be for such a small town.
