The town of Montrose is located in the Burgh of Angus district. It is a coastal town which lies 38 miles north east of Dundee in Scotland. It is the most northern coastal town in Angus and is situated between the mouths of the North and South Esk Rivers. The town is a port town with a population of 12,000, although the biggest employer in the area is GlaxoSmithKline. Between 1832 and 1834, the architect James Gillespie Graham designed a Steeple to be erected in the town, it can be seen to this day on the skyline of Montrose as it stand 220 foot tall. Another feature of the town is it’s notorious for having the widest high street in Scotland, Montrose High Street. The town also over looks a natural tidal lagoon basin called Montrose Basin. It is one of the largest inlet salt water basins in the UK and is an important habitat for the Mute Swan that thrives in the area. Montrose is known as the capital of cultural and sculpture in Angus as it is rich in architecture. A local war hero of Montrose comes in the unexpected form of a St Bernard Dog named Bamse who came across in a boat in the second world war from Norway. He was notorious around the town for looking after his crew mates and stopping any fights in the town by getting on his hind legs and clamping the assailant down with his great paws. There is now a bronze statue of Bamse at Montrose Harbour designed by Alan Herriot.
